       I have introduced white and black "Russians" as colour variants of the well-known Russian Blue cat to the Scandinavian market. From Jennifer Sedgwick's "Catwo" cattery in England I have imported a white female kitten (Catwo White Laika) and her litter brother - a black male kitten (Catwo Black Nikita). They will found the start of Danish lines of Russian White and Russian Black pedigreed cats - the first in Scandinavia.

Like in other breeds Russian Blues, Russian Whites and Russian Blacks are colour variants of the same cat having the same characteristics in build, fur quality and temper. They all have their special green eyes as the original Russian Blue cat I have been breeding since 1988.

The first Russian White kittens were born in England in 1961; a Russian blue male mated a white cat. In 1971 a mating took place in Australia between a male Russian Blue and a white Siberian cat. Already in 1975 after four generations of experimental breeding the Russian White was recognized as a pedigreed cat by the RAS Cat Club of New South Wales. In a third generation litter there were two black male kittens (in theory due to a mutation). They were the first two Australian Russian Blacks. After breeding in four generations the Russian Black was also recognized as a pedigreed cat. The year was 1982.

Today Russian Blacks and Russian Whites are fully recognized in Australia, New Zealand and in South Africa, but many breeders in USA and Europe (i.e. in England, Germany and Holland) breed these wonderful cats who can be exhibited and pedigreed in different stages of recognition by cat organisations in various countries. In the European organisation Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFé), who is issuing Danish pedigrees through "Felis Danica" only the original blue variation "Russian Blue" is able to obtain a pedigree. Accordingly all my new cats in any breed are pedigreed abroad. In this global world even cats are now independent of local conditions!

Laika and Nikita descent in a straight line from the very first English as well as the very first Australian Russian White cats. In some of the many pedigrees you will also find Danish contributions to the development of the Russian White and Russians Black breeds (i.e. Malevitch and Las Islas Russian Blue cats).

Most photos at this page are donated by the breeder of Laika and Nikita (*) except new pictures taken after the arrival of Laika and Nikita in Denmark.

In the breeding of white and black Russians a pure blue Russian Blue cat is mated with a Russian White or a Russian Black. This has been the case in all pedigreed matings in the development of the Catwo cats since the 1960's except in one case where a Russian White was mated to a Russian Black. A litter of such matings may include white, black as well as blue kittens.

I will continue breeding Russian Blue cats based on 'pure' blue cats with exclusively blue cats in their bloodlines. Blue kittens by black or white parents will not be used by me in pure blue lines.

My pedigreed white or black kittens will normally not be sold for breeding purposes. They may be sold to breeders in other countries who already are breeding such cats. My white or black studs are available only to such breeders.

This cat is Catwo Cairnicatski owned by Wendi Johnson in Scotland. She is a litter sister to Catwo White Laika and Catwo Black Nikita.
