GM2 Gangliosidosis

GM2 Gangliosidosis is a deadly neurological disease,
that certain lines of Burmese cats carry a predisposition to generate.

The disease is recessive which means that
both parents will have to carry the genes in order for it to appear.

GM2 Gangliosidosis destroys important functions
of the cells.

The first indications of the decease become visible at the age of 6-8 weeks. The kittens get slight shakings (tremors) of the head and hind legs. They gradually develop walking disability and failing coordination.

The disease progresses quickly and affected kittens have to be put to sleep.

A test is available to establish whether or not a Burmese has the hereditary genes for developing this decease.
